I'm extremely excited about Watchmen, and I have been since first hearing about the possibility of a film adaptation of what I consider to be Alan Moore's greatest work. I have not been this anxious to see a film since Lord Of The Rings, and I expect a huge reaction to this film from both comic novices and connoisseurs. Fans of recent comic-inspired movies will be mesmerized by the complexity and depth of the story and how it intertwines with the fantasy world of super-heroes and heroines bringing larger than life situations into a believable human drama that all of us can relate to. This story is superb, and I anticipate the film will become a classic enjoyed for generations!

"I'm so excited for Watchmen! I can't wait. It's one of those things where I was definitely the dude waiting for this movie to come out and initially being like, 'It's going to fucking suck. They're going to ruin it!' When I found out who was involved, saw coming attractions of it and watched clips, I was blown away. It looks phenomenal. I don't think there's going to be one second where any fan is going to be disappointed in this movie. That, to me, is the hardest undertaking. It's like covering a Beatles song. You typically just don't do it because everyone's going to hate it no matter what you do, but I don't see this going bad at all. I'm so excited about it. Even the sneak preview trailers blew me away. I'm very excited to be a part of it and have worked on 'Desolation Row' for the movie. The trailers that came out with the Smashing Pumpkins song and the Muse song were so fitting as well. They were regal! I can't wait. Those trailers are incredible, especially when the ship comes out of the water. The fight scene with The Comedian looks like it goes on forever. It looks so brutal. Those really drew me in. It's going to be true to the comic too. There's none of that PG-13 bullshit [Laughs]."

"Oh my God, Watchmen looks fucking dope! It looks like some comic book shit. I'm definitely going to see that one. How it was shot is a little bit like Sin City, but it reminds me of X-Men overall. Those things that glow in the dark in the trailer were crazy. They've got white eyes, and there are three or four of them. I want to see what that's about. That big blue guy sticks out. He looks like something godly. I was like, 'What the Hell is that?' I can't wait to see what they do with it. It looks like some Marvel Comics shit. I had no idea it was rated R either, that means it's going to be even better!"

Las viñetas, la acción, los monólogos, los diálogos, los personajes, el clima y el misterio de Watchmen chorrean talento visual y literario, originalidad y magnetismo. Zack Snyder reproduce con aroma, fidelidad y arte ese poderoso mundo
Me ha costado esfuerzos épicos, el abandono de prejuicios razonables y autocrítica sobre mi genética tentación al fanatismo, para volver a disfrutar de adulto con algo que me hizo mucha y grata compañía en la infancia. Se llamaban tebeos y establecía con ellos una relación naíf, me divertían, me regalaban ensoñación. Les cogí manía a principio de los setenta. Cuando me enteré de que su verdadero nombre no eran tebeos sino cómics, que representaban una forma superior de la cultura popular y del gran arte. Lo afirmaba gente tan inteligente como Umberto Eco, pero también muchos pedantes ilustrados, farsantes con carné de modernidad, semióticos de salón.
Entre los personajes hay de todo. Místicos y fanáticos, matones y vividores, asesinos y filósofos
Me reconcilié con género tan involuntariamente trascendente e intelectual gracias a las frecuentemente sombrías aventuras de Corto Maltés, ese existencialista tranquilo, hijo de un marino de Cornualles y de "La niña de Gibraltar". También me dejó huella y la vergonzante sospecha de que te podías identificar con los implacables retratos sobre gente con enorme capacidad para mentirse a sí misma y a los demás que hacía el vitriólico Georges Lauzier en su impagable serie Las cosas de la vida. Me divertí mucho con los pasotes de Makoki y su indescriptible wild bunch. Me fascinaba la brutalidad del monstruoso Rank-Xerox que se inventaron Tamburini y Liberatore.
Fiándome del consejo de amigos sin pose iconoclasta ni carné de modernidad, que además de saberlo todo del cómic siempre sintieron pasión por él, independientemente de que éste adquiriera según las épocas odiosa condición de moda, y que conocen mis ortodoxos gustos, me inquieto y me emociono con una narración sobre el horror que pueden desatar los hombres (aunque tengan forma de ratones) como Maus, me admiro con la personalidad y la fuerza expresiva de clásicos como Harold Foster y Will Eisner, sigo los tenebrosos pasos de ese creador de infiernos urbanitas llamado Frank Miller, me admira la capacidad narrativa y la imaginación de Alan Moore. El cómic no llena mi mundo como lo hacen el cine y la literatura, pero ya sé que dentro de algunos de ellos pueden coexistir sensaciones y universos que asocio con películas hipnóticas y con novelas negrísimas.
Las desasosegantes historias paridas por el cerebro del enigmático Alan Moore han tenido suerte al ser trasladadas a imágenes de cine. Albert y Allen Hughes recrearon con estilo y atmósfera en From hell el atormentado rastreo de un detective opiómano sobre la identidad de Jack El Destripador, ese asesino de humor macabro obsesionado con masacrar a las putas callejeras en el Londres victoriano. Y me parece más que sugestiva V de vendetta, producida por los temibles hermanos Wachowski y dirigida por su antiguo director de fotografía James McTeigue. Es una adaptación brillante de una tesis tan audaz como provocadora. En una Inglaterra gobernada por un Estado de concepción y metodología fascista (aunque se supone que legitimado por las urnas), un justiciero cubierto con una mascara ajusta letales cuentas con Goliath y se empeña en la voladura del Parlamento para provocar la rebelión del oprimido pueblo. Rodada con pulso, clima y convicción, recrea con tanta fidelidad como talento las esencias del complejo universo de Alan Moore. A mí me enamora la voz, el lenguaje y los modales de ese vengador tan refinado como letal, su subterránea, tortuosa y finalmente conmovedora historia de amor con la desconcertada mujer a la que protege en su acorazada guarida, la personalidad de los villanos.
He tardado demasiado tiempo en leer Watchmen. A pesar de que representa la Biblia no ya para los fans del guionista Alan Moore y del dibujante Dave Gibbons, sino para la mayoría de los amantes con paladar de las novelas gráficas. Tal vez por mis prejuicios hacia el género de superhéroes. Nunca me han provocado excesivo magnetismo ni Superman, ni Spiderman, ni el Capitán América, ni el Increíble Hulk, ni Batman. Lo cual no impide que reconozca como cine de primera clase lo que ha logrado Christopher Nolan en su acercamiento a Batman en Batman begins y en El caballero oscuro.
Pero me equivocaba al imaginar que Watchmen estaba protagonizada por superhéroes. Bueno, hay uno, el Doctor Manhattan, pero el resto son seres demasiado humanos, gente que adoptó una mascara para ejercer de sheriffs en las turbulentas calles. Y entre ellos hay de todo. Místicos y fanáticos, matones y vividores, asesinos y filósofos, presuntos salvadores de la Humanidad e incendiarios apocalípticos. Les conocimos jóvenes y actualmente andan hechos polvo, conjurados después de muchos años porque acaban de cargase a El Comediante, que siempre fue cínico, depredador y amoral. Mi favorito se llama Roscharch. Es el más desgraciado de todos, un búho enmascarado, loco, hiperviolento, más solo que la una, convencido de que hay que purificar con sangre la corrupta ciudad.
Las viñetas, la acción, los monólogos, los diálogos, los personajes, las situaciones, el clima y el misterio de Watchmen chorrean talento visual y literario, originalidad y magnetismo. Ya puedo comprender las razones de su categoría de icono.
Y su adaptación al cine es muy digna. Zack Snyder, director de la vibrante 300, se acerca a Watchmen con enorme respeto, sin peligrosas tentaciones de autoría absoluta, reproduciendo con aroma, fidelidad y arte el poderoso mundo de Alan Moore. Es probable que le sobre un poco de metraje y el desenlace me fatiga ligeramente. Pero su experimento ha merecido la pena. Y no era fácil.
