Smith reveals that the new series will see the Timelord pushed further than he has ever been before. "I think The Doctor is going to face his darkest days," he said. "I've always wanted to explore the dark bit of The Doctor and take him to that place and get him placed in that situation were he has choices that are so drastic that they tear him apart."
He added: "The Doctor is having to face a very great and present and dangerous evil, and without giving too much away, heÂ’s got a huge battle on his hands."Smith also revealed that a secret that companion Amy Pond is forced to keep from him will put strain between the pair. "The Doctor's relationship with Amy Pond is going to change forever," he said.

Matt Smith to quit Doctor Who after Christmas special
Matt Smith, the actor, will step down from the role of Doctor Who at the end of the year.He will bow out in the Christmas special when he will be replaced by a new incarnation of the Time Lord.
Smith, 30, who has been in the role since 2010, said it had been "an honour" to play the part.He said: "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show.
I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience.
Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years."
