Harvey Pekar, author of the cult comic series “American Splendor,” has died. He was 70. Pekar mined his dyspeptic personality for the autobiographical comic, which was set in Cleveland, Ohio, where he lived, and whose central topic was basically Pekar’s complaints about his life. Pekar’s friend R. Crumb inspired him to begin the comic and illustrated early issues, while Pekar handled writing duties. In 2003, “American Splendor” was adapted into an Oscar-nominated biopic of the same name starring Paul Giamatti. Pekar himself appeared in the film. Over the years, Pekar made several appearances on David Letterman’s show. Here’s one of those appearances.
