It's well known that touring can cause substantial damage to the planet, what with all the airplane and bus travel and cost of transporting stage set-ups that can take up multiple vehicles.
The average struggling band probably aren't going to have much of an impact on the environment, but a huge band like Pearl Jam leaves a massive carbon footprint on the planet when they're on the road.
So with that in mind, Pearl Jam will invest $210,000 U.S. (about $211,600 Canadian) and are partnering with Cascade Land Conservancy to plant trees in Washington state.
According to Reuters, the trees will help offset 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide Pearl Jam released into the atmosphere by airplanes, trucks, ships and hotels on their 32-date tour last year. It will also cover for any fans who traveled to see them.
"Pearl Jam is a band, but we are also a business," guitarist Stone Gossard told Reuters.
"We're seeing ourselves as a Washington business, a regional business that is acknowledging its carbon footprint and hoping to inspire other businesses."
In 2003, Pearl Jam donated $150,000 U.S. to make up for any environmental harm caused by manufacturing and distributing 2002's Riot Act album.
