Y Matt Cameron qué tiene que decir al respecto?“thereÂ’s a little bit of evolution going on with some of this new music, but weÂ’re not straying too far from the formula. It has all our signature elements — and more. I think people are going to really love it.”
Poco a poco y buena letra...¿Diverso?
"We're pretty far into our record now. I don't really know how to describe it musically, because typically with SOUNDGARDEN... every time we write a song we always take it for what it is and try to make it the most it can be. It's very diverse, I can tell you that."
Speaking to Kerrang!, Thayil said:"We want to make sure the material excites us. The last thing we want to make is another grunge or metal record."
He added that the Seattle band want to record an album with "material that excites us."
Thayil said that there was no target release date for the album yet, only adding that the band want to record and release the album "as soon as possible", but that singer Chris Cornell's solo tour and drummer Matt Cameron's commitments with Pearl Jam have to come first.
He said: "Everything is contingent on the primary careers of the band. Everyone wants the album to come out as soon as possible, but at the moment, there's no reason to rush anything."
Thayil also said the band would be likely to tour the new album when it is released.
While it's too soon for Thayil to give a brief summation of the new material, he does have an idea of the direction it's heading. "We probably, after 13, 14 years, have new things to bring to the table," he says. "Our interests have gone off in slightly different directions, but at our core we're still moved by the things that informed Soundgarden's body of work, which is the sort of dark beauty, heaviness and an aggressiveness without being viscerally old and awkward. There's gonna be a lot that's familiar and similar. There's gonna be stuff that's definitely different; the stuff that's different however will be within the context of those elements that are described earlier."
A post on Twitter early last year from frontman Chris Cornell about the relaunch of the Soundgarden fan club led to overeager fans mistakingly thinking the Seattle band was reforming -- and word soon went viral.
In an interview with Kerrang! (via The Guardian), guitarist Kim Thayil revealed that talk of the band's 'return' led to the group being offered shows -- and after thinking it would be "fun" to play a Seattle show, the rest, they say, is history.
He said, "We had neglected our legacy and our fans, so we were just starting the fan club up again."
But a less-than-clear tweet from Cornell -- which said, "The 12-year break is over & school is back in session" -- led to mistaken hopes that the band were reuniting. He added: "I spent a lot of time trying to explain to my friends that we weren't back together. My mother called and said, 'We've heard the news, why didn't you tell us?'"
"It generated a lot of interest and my phone was ringing off the hook with people offering us shows. We turned most of them down, but thought it would be fun to play that show in Seattle [in April 2010] and eventually Lollapalooza. It was only around then that there was talk about doing some new material."

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil recently had a chat with Stereogum regarding the bands progress with their new album. When asked about the status of their new material Thayil offered:
“We’re recording. We’re kind of doing it in stages. We have about 14 songs in various stages of completion. Previously, we’d just block out a bunch of time and go and track everything at once, but we can’t really do that right now. Matt has commitments to Pearl Jam, Chris has a solo tour happening and Soundgarden is touring in July. So we do the studio thing around those other engagements, which actually is turning out to be a lot better for us.
It takes the pressure off in some ways. It’s not like, OK you’ve got three weeks and everything needs to get done in those three weeks. We can work at our own pace right night and take things one step at a time. We’re really enjoying it. We don’t have a record company or management pressuring us to hurry up, so we can really savor the process this time.”
Meanwhile, when quizzed about the direction of the material, Thayil responded with”
“The vibe of the songs is definitely very heavy. We’ve always tried to explore how to make this really heavy, aggressive music without sounding like a bunch of knuckle-dragging meatheads. I think these songs are kind of exploring that idea. Ways of emoting aggression and anger and hostility in ways that feel new. You know, we never were really chipper guys. We were never the party band, or even a particularly social band.
We were always really just hard workers and a kind of musicianÂ’s band. ThatÂ’s what we wanted to be that. We wanted to play for an audience that reminded us of ourselves back when we were young, I always liked the idea that our fans were that guy or girl who collected records and wanted to start a band of their own and play good music. I always imagined we were the band that made the party end.
Like, ok guys it’s time to leave now, someone just put on Superunknown! I always felt like we made music that was good for driving, good for listening to really loud. Wait, does that answer your question at all? The new songs sound really heavy. I’ll just say that.”
Reno Gazette-Journal: Do you have a time frame on the release of the album you are working on?
Thayil: Yeah. It will probably be sometime early in 2012. I think our goal is the spring, but we're not going to push ourselves. If it's earlier that'd be great. If we don't think it's perfect by the spring, then you know (trails off). We won't be dilatory in the delivery of the album.
Reno Gazette-Journal: Will it sound like the old SOUNDGARDEN or will people hear a lot of differences?
Thayil: There certainly will be differences, in that the four of us have gone in slightly different directions. I mean, still kind of in the general genus of rock, but specifically there might be slightly different experiences and influences that we might bring to the table. I think when the four of us get together, it's still going to come out sounding like SOUNDGARDEN.
Reno Gazette-Journal: Do you play any of the new material live or do you intend to at some point during the tour?
Thayil: It's not super likely for a variety of reasons. We're still working on the recording of the songs, and the recording of the songs allows the songs to develop in terms of arrangement and dynamics. The other thing is, we wouldn't really want the song to be floating out there before we were ready to release it ourselves.
Reno Gazette-Journal: SOUNDGARDEN called it quits at the height of its popularity. Was there any question what it would be like coming back after nearly 15 years?
Thayil: Yeah. You can never be really sure of the market, especially one that's floundering in terms of record sales and concert attendance. But I'd always heard and I think everyone else had always heard over the years the positive growth that we've had and the influence on other musicians and younger bands. That's the most satisfying thing, is to know that new bands are being formed that site us as influences or as inspiration at some point in their career or their youth.
